In 2011, the City of Lynchburg and the Virginia Department of Historic Resources collaborated to fund the National Register of Historic Places nomination of the Fifth Street Historic District through VDHR's Cost Share Program. HistoryTech surveyed more than 70 commercial, religious, and residential resources within the commercial corridor. Construction dates of contributing resources ranged from 1800 to 1964, and surveyed resources included two of only three surviving early 19th century taverns in Lynchburg, two of the city's oldest commercial buildings, and mid-20th century modern automobile-oriented buildings.
