Historic Resources Survey

Fifth Street Historic District Survey, City of Lynchburg, VA

The ca. 1880s Gish Tobacco Factory on Court Street later served as Mill No. 2 for the Lynchburg Hoisery Mills, where African American employees labored in a segregated workplaceIn 2011, the City of Lynchburg and the Virginia Department of Historic Resources collaborated to fund the National Register of Historic Places nomination of the Fifth Street Historic District through VDHR's Cost Share Program. HistoryTech surveyed more than 70 commercial, religious, and residential resources within the commercial corridor. Construction dates of contributing resources ranged from 1800 to 1964, and surveyed resources included two of only three surviving early 19th century taverns in Lynchburg, two of the city's oldest commercial buildings, and mid-20th century modern automobile-oriented buildings.

Brookneal Historic District Survey, Campbell County, VA

In preparation for a National Register of Historic Places Historic District nomination, HistoryTech surveyed, at the reconnaissance level, more than 120 individual buildings and structures on 104 properties. The project area included the core of Brookneal's downtown commercial district and residential areas on Cook Avenue, Old Main Street, and Adams Ferry Road. Of these resources, 5 had been previously surveyed in the 1970s; all others were new surveys.

Amherst County Cost Share Survey

The Amherst County Historic Resources Survey was funded by the County of Amherst and the Virginia Department of Historic Resources (DHR) and was administered jointly by DHR and Sweet Briar College’s Tusculum Institute. The survey was undertaken by HistoryTech (formerly The Antiquaries), a preservation planning firm based in Lynchburg, with assistance from Landmark Preservation Associates of Lexington. The main objective of the survey was to broaden the range of historic resources recorded in DHR’s database by documenting 275 mostly previously unidentified resources. The survey resulted in the documentation of a total of 292 resources, primarily houses and farm complexes but also mills, stores, churches, and other building types. Survey was conducted in areas of the county outside National Forest lands, comprising approximately 75% of the county’s 475 square miles. Digital and hard-copy survey files were produced for DHR and the locality and two potential historic districts—Sandidges and Pedlar Mills—were proposed as eligible for listing in the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places. Copies of the final Survey Report (146 pages) will be donated to the Amherst County Public Library and the Amherst County Museum and Historical Society. In addition, the ACMHS will receive a complete set of survey files for its archives so that the data can be easily accessed by the public.
